The Opium Smoker

George Barbier · Fantasio, 1915

What it is

A George Barbier plate for the Paris magazine Fantasio: a woman reclining with an opium pipe, drawn in the high Art Deco line.

Why it matters

Barbier was the great stylist of the pochoir age; his magazine work carried the decadent mood of the 1910s salon to a mass readership, suggestion doing the work of exposure.

What to notice

The whole plate is pattern — the textiles, the smoke, the pose all resolve into one decorative rhythm.

Languor, drawn as ornament.
